The nomination deadline is approaching for NYTHA's D. Wayne Lukas Award, which recognizes a New York-based assistant trainer who demonstrates the qualities that the late Hall of Fame trainer himself exemplified - dedication, a strong work ethic, and a high commitment to excellence. Submissions are due by Tuesday, June 30.
NYTHA established the award last summer following the passing of the famed Hall of Fame conditioner. Christophe Lorieul, the longtime cornerstone of Clement Stable, was the popular inaugural winner in 2025.
Owners and trainers are invited to nominate a New York-based assistant trainer for the $10,000 award, which will be presented Wednesday, September 2, D. Wayne Lukas's birthday.
"NYTHA created this award to herald these unsung heroes that are critical to the success of every stable," said NYTHA President Tina Marie Bond. "'The Coach' mentored so many young people in this sport, and Christophe was a fitting winner of the first D. Wayne Lukas Award. Let us know what makes your assistant so integral to your team. Tell us what makes them exceptional, whether it's the standard they set in the shedrow or how essential they are to this 24/7, 365-day industry. How do they contribute to the backstretch community? To qualify, nominees must meet the following criteria:
- based in New York at least six months every year;
- licensed as an assistant trainer for at least three years;
- held current position for a minimum of a year
Owners and trainers can nominate candidates through an online form to the D. Wayne Lukas Award Committee.
