When Knightsbridge last raced at Churchill Downs in November 2023, he announced himself as a promising prospect for grade 1 competition with a dazzling 10 1/2-length debut triumph.

The road to the grade 1 level since has been up and down, but now he is firing on all cylinders and ready to take his shot May 2 in the $1 million Churchill Downs Stakes (G1) in one of Kentucky Derby (G1) Day's most exciting undercard races as all 11 entrants are graded or group winners.

The Godolphin homebred son of Nyquist  would only make three starts between that maiden win and November of 2025—never less than four months between races. However, Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott finally got him into the groove of competition, and the results have been stellar.

From Nov. 22 through Feb. 28, Knightsbridge has swept all four starts by a combined 23 1/2 lengths and earned three grade 3 trophies. His most recent start in the one-turn mile Gulfstream Park Mile Stakes (G3) was a tour de force, winning by 11 1/4 lengths.

Knightsbridge is 3-for-4 at Saturday's 7-furlong distance and will break from post 6 with regular rider Junior Alvarado aboard as the 9-5 favorite.

The competition will be tough, especially with the Bob Baffert-trained duo of Cornucopian and Imagination. Both horses are campaigned by the partnerships of SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Stonestreet Stables, Bashor Racing, Robert Masterson, Tom Ryan, Waves Edge Capital, and Catherine Donovan. Cornucopian also includes Determined Stables and Hill 'n' Dale Equine Holdings as partners.

Cornucopian is another who has held high expectations since his 5 3/4-length debut score at Oaklawn Park in February 2025, leading to him being entered in the Arkansas Derby (G1) for his second start. The son of Into Mischief  now attempts to stay unbeaten in 2026 following a successful return to stakes company in the 7-furlong San Carlos Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita Park March 29.

At odds of 7-2, he is the more favored morning-line choice of the Baffert trainees, but it is Imagination at 6-1 who comes in with the better career achievements. Another son of Into Mischief, Imagination has won three grade 2 races and placed in the same number of grade 1s. Returning from an eight-month layoff in September, he has rattled off a win in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes (G2), runner-up finish in the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1), and traveled to Saudi Arabia to win the Riyadh Dirt Sprint (G2) after a hampered start left him in the rear of the field early.

He has proven adjustable with solid performances both being near or far off the lead, giving rider Flavien Prat many options Saturday.

Banishing, who is co-owned by Sharaf Mohammed Al Hariri, Lawrence Roman, and trainer David Jacobson, also returns from a trip overseas where he won the March 28 Godolphin Mile (G2) at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. In this race a year ago, he finished in a dead heat for second with future Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) winner Nysos a neck behind multiple grade 1 winner Mindframe , with future champion male sprinter Book'em Danno behind them in fourth.

The 6-year-old Ghostzapper gelding is certainly battle-tested when running at Churchill Downs given that competition, and he is 2-1-0 from three starts at the distance in his career.

The field's biggest wild card comes in the form of Tomoya Ozasa's T O Elvis. Bred in Kentucky by Jeff and Melissa Prunzik, the 4-year-old Volatile  colt has been based in Japan throughout his career for trainer Daisuke Takayanagi.

Takayanagi has had success at Churchill Downs in the past. In 2024, he shipped and saddled T O Password to a fifth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby one day after T O Saint Denis ran a gallant second to Godolphin's First Mission  in the Alysheba Stakes (G2).

Shipping from Japan last week alongside Kentucky Derby contender Danon Bourbon, T O Elvis' flight was delayed several hours in Anchorage, Alaska.

"It was a hard trip for him," said Yuya Kado, who has been riding T O Elvis in the mornings at Churchill Downs, in comments translated by Yuto Kumagai April 27. "The plane was delayed, and he was tired as well. He didn't eat well when he got here, but he's getting better."

Now with a few days to settle in to Louisville, Ky., connections will hope T O Elvis can run back to his season-ending triumph in the Capella Stakes (G3) at Nakayama Racecourse. With a record of 5-0-3 from eight career starts, Kado said he is considered one of the best dirt sprinters in Japan. However, two of his three losses have come in his only two starts beyond 6 furlongs.

"American races are faster, so hopefully that helps him a lot," Kado said.

The field has also drawn graded stakes winners Disco Time, Macho Music, Hall of Fame, Disruptor (who is cross-entered in the May 1 Alysheba), Crazy Mason, and Point Dume.
