The List: An Update and Review of the Top 25 General Sires List Rankings

Into Mischief at Spendthrift Farm

Anne M. Eberhardt

March 28 might be the day that unofficially served as the changing of the guard at the top of the North American general sires list. That's when Magnitude won the $12 million Dubai World Cup (G1), representing his sire Not This Time

If the manner in which Not This Time's progeny came on strong at the end of 2025 was a warning shot, then Magnitude's victory is a heck of an opening salvo.

But maybe what happened later that day, when Commandment won the Florida Derby (G1) and Renegade won the Arkansas Derby (G1), was that their sire, Into Mischief , declared the battle for top sire was a long way from over. It certainly doesn't look like he is going to concede that his seven-year run as the top North American sire is approaching its end.

But it's also foolish to think this is a two-horse race.

For the last four years, Gun Runner  has been a top-five stallion based on progeny earnings. Nyquist  has come on strong to start 2026 after ranking eighth last year. And there's the late, great Uncle Mo, who is the sire of Nyquist. Uncle Mo's offspring have already earned 44% of what they did a year ago.

With the race to the top seemingly set to play out much more closely than in recent years, BloodHorse asked several industry figures their thoughts on the sire landscape as the 2026 racing season kicks into high gear. Because of relationships across the industry, these people were granted anonymity.

On the battle at the top of the rankings:
Commentor 1: "They're all awfully good stallions, as you know, but I think you're splitting hairs with Into Mischief and Not This Time being top. Not This Time, his best is to come because … the better mares are just now coming. His book is kind of a who's who. … I think it's those two, and then that next level is what you're talking about. Not very far behind are Gun Runner, Nyquist, and Constitution is on the come."

On the benefit to the industry of having so much competition at the top:
Commentor 1: "Diversity is always good in any sport. To have some competition, it's tough. It's always good. Everybody who goes to sales is not going to be looking for one stallion. You can go back to Mr. Prospector, Northern Dancer, I guess Storm Cat really didn't have an equal, but I think the better the stallions are, the better the breed is going to be."

Commentor 2: "I think you look at the history of sire lines—there's constant change, and I think that anytime one sire line dominates, eventually that sire line will pass on and then there'll be another sire line that moves into those spots. So I think it's natural. It's not a competition, because the Thoroughbred is a hybrid, and you need speed and dominant sire lines that work for a while, and then they pass on."

On Into Mischef:
Commentor 3: "There's a little bit of a changing of the guard. Into Mischief has been a breed-shaping stallion. What he's done is truly remarkable. He is 21 now. When stallions reach that age, when they get into their 20s, the bloom starts to come off the rose a little bit. And that hasn't happened. Certainly hasn't happened commercially. Certainly hasn't happened on the racetrack. He continues to fire on all cylinders."

On Not This Time:
Commentor 1: "He didn't get to run many times, so he was a freak of nature racehorse, and he's got all the pedigree to do it. His brother, Liam's Map, is not a slouch in the stallion shed. And he is a beautiful horse with pedigree, talent, good mind on him. Everything you'd want out of a stallion prospect."

On who is an underrated stallion who deserves more attention:
Commentor 3: "I think a horse that I've always thought was a great value … is Liam's Map. He was always a favorite stallion of mine to start a young mare with. He's just a solid, proven, consistent stallion. And from a commercial standpoint, he'll give you a good-looking horse. He gives you leg. He kind of toes that line of being a proven stallion. But you can also have plenty of success in the sale ring. … Another horse that has always kind of teetered at a level, and has not been able to really break through, is Twirling Candy. Last year he had an unbelievable year and saw him rise to $75,000 for this season. He's just been a brilliantly consistent stallion with a lot of versatility, both dirt and turf. That's one that's kind of always been a bit underappreciated."

Commentor 2: "The Uncle Mo line for sure, although Uncle Mo, for me, wasn't an attractive horse physically. He adds a speed influence, and he's got an outside pedigree sire line because it's a bit of an outcross. And of course, I think he's an excellent broodmare sire, too. And that's the other thing you need to look into is broodmare sires, who's going to be the next influential broodmare sire? That can be as important as sire. All that's a bit of a riddle when you're looking at horses, and you're breeding horses, trying to figure out which one's going to have the most influence. … I think you have to predict these things by the first, second, or third season of a horse standing stud, I think by the third season, fourth season, then their positions are established. They either produced or they haven't produced."

On when is too soon to make declarations about a stallion based on rankings:
Commentor 3: "One of the most common mistakes I see people make is whether it's breeders or it's stallion farms, jumping on a champion freshman sire or one who had a successful first crop. The stud feed doubles or triples, and jumps up, and then the stallion suddenly goes quiet. Now you're sitting on a pretty heavy investment. … I've always taken the approach that I'd rather pay more in two years' time once the stallion has really shown that he's legitimate."

Commentor 2: "The end of the second crop's 3-year-old year. You've got pretty good clarity by then on whether or not it's going to be a certain type of producer. … And the truth is, if a stallion operator judges a horse or a stallion before the end of the third crops' 3-year-old year, I think they could pull the trigger too soon before they judge that sire as a success or failure, because it does take time."

On trying to determine the next big stallion:
Commentor 2: "I think one of the advantages that I have as a horseman is that I try to get through the yearling markets and look at the foals by every stallion, whether they're Book 1 or Book 6 horses, and try to figure out which ones have put what I would call a stamp on their progeny. I think a good sire has to stamp the progeny. There has to be a dominance and you have to look at it as colts and fillies both ways. … A horse that's baffled me, to some extent, is Flightline because I don't see his influence on either side at this point, although I've only looked at one crop. I'm trying to figure out: is he a sire of influence, or isn't he? Obviously, (his offspring are) very expensive and they're very popular, but I haven't seen his stamp."
