Freshman sire Corniche got off to the kind of start befitting a champion 2-year-old when his first runner splashed to victory April 3 in the first juvenile race of the spring meet at Keeneland.
Owned and trained by Wesley Ward, 2-year-old colt Suspicions was sent off as the 6-5 favorite in the 4 1/2-furlong maiden event. Bumped at the start by rivals on both sides, the colt recovered quickly to vie for the early lead. Under jockey Pietro Moran, he pressed pacesetter Joe Joe Dude through an opening quarter in :23.01. As the field hit the stretch, Suspicions assumed control and pulled away from his competition with some encouragement from Moran. He held his rivals at bay to score by 2 lengths, covering the 4 1/2 furlongs on a sloppy (sealed) track in a final time of :52.74 and paid $4.60 for the win.
Depending on how the colt exits his victorious debut, Ward said he could return in the $250,000 Kentucky Juvenile Stakes April 29 at Churchill Downs. Ward marveled that Suspicions performed the way he did with only three works ahead of Friday's race.
"I have this one and I have one for Gatewood Bell, and both are runners," Ward said of Suspicions and another Corniche 2-year-old he trains for Bell, Keeneland's vice president of racing and head of the Hat Creek Racing Partnership.
Bred in Kentucky by Mr. Wilbert Tan out of the unraced Nyquist mare Manaoag, Ward purchased Suspicions as a yearling for $200,000 at the 2025 Fasig-Tipton's The July Sale.
Corniche, who stands at Ashford Stud for $15,000, was the champion 2-year-old male of 2021. The son of Quality Road won that year's American Pharoah Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) at Del Mar for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.
"Champion sire—this is what we buy these type of horses for. We love them," said Charlie O'Connor, director of sales for Coolmore America. "As you can see, they're very early. He was very well received at the 2-year-old sales as well. ... They sold awfully well. They're beautiful horses, beautiful, balanced, well-made horses. So this isn't a total surprise, but they also have to go out and do it.
"So it's very good, and no better man than Wesley Ward to do it. And he's also saying he's going to do it with (fellow Ashford freshman sire) Golden Pal here in the next couple of weeks, too. So we've a lot of excitement at the farm. We've a lot of freshman sires with 2-year-old (starters) with Golden Pal, Jack Christopher, and Epicenter. So this is a nice strike to hit."
While in the winner's circle accompanying Ward and other supporters, O'Connor fielded a call from a breeder, hoping to have his mare covered by the popular sire.
"The phone's ringing already," O'Connor said, smiling.
O'Connor said he expects this initial success will increase demand for the stallion's progeny at upcoming 2-year-olds in training sales.
"They'll be hot cookies," he said.
