Consignor Jesse Hoppel had a lot to be happy about on Day 2 of the under-tack show, March 5, for the Ocala Breeders' Sales March 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale. He sent out Hip 284, a filly by Gainesway's first-crop sire Drain the Clock , who equaled the OBS track record for a quarter-mile, breezing in :20 1/5. Another horse from his consignment, Hip 299, a colt by Mo Town , breezed a quarter-mile in :20 2/5.
Hip 284 is out of the unraced Street Boss mare Queen of Aces, who is the dam of two foals to race, both winners. The filly was bred in Kentucky by Southern Comfort Farm.
"We knew she was fast," Hoppel said. "We let her run and found she was faster than most of them here. She had a good day. I have a lot of Drain the Clocks right now, her and several others in training, and to tell you the truth, I can't think of one I don't like. I have another colt tomorrow that is going to breeze pretty good. I think all in all, the sire might be a pretty decent stallion. I haven't found one (Drain the Clock) I didn't like yet.
"Some horses by themselves are self-motivated, and they'll do it on their own. Those horses who want to do it by themselves and are naturally aggressive, they like doing it, and those are the horses I try to send farther because they like it. If you like your job, you do it better."
Hip 299, a son of grade 1 winner Mo Town, is the second foal out of the Into Mischief mare Reckon, who is a half sister to a stakes winner. The colt was bred in Kentucky by William Lussky and picked up by Antigo as a weanling for $40,000 at the 2024 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.
"That horse has been unreal," Hoppel said about Hip 299. "I bought him as a baby and was thinking I would call somebody and get a partner on the way home. And I ended up not calling anybody and keeping him for myself. He just grew up and got better and better and better. You pull him out on the end of the shank, he's absolutely striking. Fellow consignors that I respect on the way up to the chute today were asking, 'Who's that?' Just a physically imposing individual."
Hip 372, a filly by Nyquist , and Hip 391, a colt by 2025's leading freshman sire Yaupon , both clocked the fastest furlong of the day, breezing in :09 3/5.
Bred in Kentucky by Cannon Thoroughbreds, Hip 372 is out of the Lucky Pulpit mare Smooth and Savvy, who is a half sister to the grade 1-winning millionaire, Smooth Like Strait. She was purchased by Forest Bloodstock for $300,000 at last year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale, and is offered by Wavertree Stables (Ciaran Dunne), agent.
Hip 391 is the fifth foal of the Giant's Causeway mare Stand Back, who is a half sister to the dam of grade 1-placed Saucy Lady T. The mare has produced two winners from four to race, including multiple graded stakes-placed Step Forward. The colt was bred in Florida by John B. Penn. He was purchased as a weanling in 2024 by Scott and Evan Dilworth for $110,000 at Keeneland's November sale, and subsequently failed to meet his reserve at last year's Keeneland September sale, attracting a final bid of $235,000. He is consigned by Kings Equine, agent.
A total of 10 horses breezed a furlong in :09 4/5.
Session 3 of the under-tack show will begin March 6 at 8:00 a.m. ET, with hips 409-612 set to breeze. Full results for the under-tack show can be found at obssales.com.
