Darby Dan Farm's Shirl's Speight , a grade 1 winner by Speightstown out of 2011 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1T) winner Perfect Shirl, sired his first reported foal at Crupper Bloodstock near Paris, Ky., Feb. 9.
Crupper Bloodstock bred the filly out of the multiple stakes-placed winner Ultimate Class (During), who also produced multiple graded stakes-placed winner Bad Beat Brian, who has banked $865,158.
"I was very pleased with this filly from the moment she stood," Crupper Bloodstock's Megan Morrison said. "Even in a newborn, it was obvious she had a great angle to her shoulder and a deep heart girth."
The globetrotting Shirl's Speight, a homebred for Charles Fipke, was versatile and accomplished on all three surfaces. He won the 2022 Tampa Bay Stakes (G3T) at Tampa Bay Downs before he registered his biggest victory in the 2022 Mile Stakes (G1T) at Keeneland, earning a 113 Equibase Speed Figure and 104 Beyer Speed Figure. He would later run second by three-quarters of a length to eventual champion male turf horse Modern Games in the 2022 Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T). Shirl's Speight retired with a 5-3-2 record from 25 starts and earned $1,497,245.
The late Speightstown, the 2004 champion sprinter, sired 150 black-type winners including 2016 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) winner Tamarkuz and 2022 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1) winner Olympiad .
Fipke purchased Shirl's Speight's second dam, grade 1 winner Lady Shirl, for $485,000 at the 2005 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. He bred Lady Shirl to his homebred Sadler's Wells stallion Perfect Soul to get Breeders' Cup winner Perfect Shirl, who earned more than $1.3 million during her accomplished racing career.
Shirl's Speight stands for an advertised fee of $5,000.
