'Unacceptable' Noise Levels Cancel Aqueduct Sunday Card

The "March Madness Auto and Bike Show" was producing unsafe racing conditions.

The New York Racing Association has canceled March 30's eight-race card at Aqueduct Racetrack due to unacceptable noise levels created by the 'March Madness Auto and Bike Show,' an event being held at the neighboring Resorts World Casino.

NYRA was not notified in advance that the event would create potentially unsafe racing conditions. Despite NYRA's repeated attempts to rectify the situation, Resorts World Casino was unable to make the adjustments necessary to allow racing to proceed.

As a result, Sunday's card has been canceled in its entirety.

"Resorts World scheduled an event in a parking lot immediately adjacent to the top of the stretch without providing NYRA with advance notice or an opportunity to discuss its potential impact on our racing operations," said NYRA's senior vice president of racing and operations Andrew Offerman. "We were then faced with wildly unpredictable sound levels and other concerns causing potentially unsafe circumstances for horses and riders. We were left with no choice but to cancel racing due to these concerns. NYRA will work with NYTHA and the NYSGC to determine appropriate next steps and how we can make up these lost racing opportunities for our participants."

Aqueduct Racetrack will remain open for simulcasting on Sunday, and online wagering is available through www.NYRABets.com

Live racing at Aqueduct will resume April 3 with an eight-race card to mark the beginning of the Big A spring meet. First post is 1:10 p.m. ET.
