The board of stewards of The Jockey Club of Canada shared news April 17 of the death of chief steward, Doug Anderson, April 16.

He was recently announced as a 2025 Special Sovereign Award recipient. Selected unanimously by the Jockey Club of Canada's Stewards, the award recognizes a particular achievement within a given year. The honor was given to Doug for his unwavering dedication to Thoroughbred racing, breeding, and aftercare in Canada and for honoring the mission of The Jockey Club of Canada.

Anderson will be dearly missed by his family, his friends, and colleagues in racing and beyond. He dearly loved his horses and the sport of horse racing, regularly journeying to the Cheltenham Festival and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) each year. His passion for racing, breeding, and aftercare in Canada earned him posts as chief steward of The Jockey Club of Canada and a seat on Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (Ontario Division)'s board of directors.

Doug had been involved as an owner of Sovereign Award winners A Bit o' Gold and Millie Girl. He also had bred a small band of mares in Ontario every year.

The board of stewards had appointed Anderson to succeed R. Glenn Sikura as chief steward June 29, 2024, and he had been in the position ever since.
