Frosted, best known for a record-breaking performance in the Metropolitan Handicap (G1), was euthanized because of an acute episode of laminitis April 15 at Darley's Jonabell Farm.

Darley reported the 14-year-old stallion's death, noting the son of multiple leading sire Tapit  will be greatly missed. Frosted will be buried at Jonabell Farm.

A Godolphin homebred, Frosted earned three grade 1 wins, including a tour de force as a 4-year-old in the 2016 Met Mile, which he won by a race record 14 1/4 lengths in stakes-record time of 1:32.73 on a fast track despite carrying high weight of 120 pounds. Darley reports his Beyer Speed Figure of 123 for that race is still the highest ever at a mile.

"It was unbelievable. It was a wild, wild race," said winning trainer Kiaran McLaughlin after the race. "He has been doing great all the time and you say that every time that they are doing great, but for him to beat that great of horses like that is pretty incredible. ... He is very talented and it was a great win for the entire team."

At stud, Frosted sired 36 black-type winners and 14 graded stakes winners. He is the sire of 2024 Carter Stakes (G2) winner Post Time , who finished second in that year's Met Mile. Frosted also boasts Frosted Over, Canada's champion 3-year-old male of 2021; and Senescal, last year's Horse of the Year in Panama.

"Our team is deeply saddened by Frosted's passing, but it was our only option given the dire circumstances," Godolphin's Dan Pride said. "Frosted was an exceptional and exciting racehorse and an accomplished sire. In addition, he was also a huge fan favorite for thousands of visitors over the years here at Jonabell."

At 3, the imposing gray/roan also won a key Kentucky Derby (G1) prep, taking the 2015 Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) at Aqueduct Racetrack before later securing a classic placing when second to Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the Belmont Stakes (G1).

Frosted then blossomed as a 4-year-old. He won the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 (G2) in the spring at Meydan Racecourse, prior to returning stateside. Following his record-breaking Met Mile win, he added the Whitney Stakes (G1) in August at Saratoga Race Course. Frosted retired with a record of 6-6-2 in 19 starts and earnings of $3,972,800.

Out of grade 2 winner Fast Cookie, a daughter of Deputy Minister, Frosted was a half brother to grade 3 winner Indulgent, a daughter of Bernardini.
