What's In a Name? Only 'U' Would Know

Jim Bryce said the ultimate decision was to pay tribute to the colt's sire.

Jim and Claire Bryce had about as important a decision as one could have when they named their Preakness Stakes (G1) runner Heart of Honor: spelling.

"The big decision was to spell it properly with a 'u' (honour) or honor his daddy. We thought the correct thing to do was honor dad," Jim Bryce said.

The rest of the name for the Honor A. P.  colt came from his physical appearance.

"Because of the little (star) on his head, someone said it looks a little like a heart shape," Claire Bryce added.

Still, the spelling caused some issues back in the United Kingdom.

Claire Bryce said some of the merchandise they had made to promote Heart of Honor uses what Jim Bryce called the "proper spelling" of honor—with the 'u'.

"We just crossed it out with a pen," Claire Bryce said with a laugh.
