The third race at Keeneland April 11 was declared a no contest when the Ismael Bahena-trained Ransomware stumbled going by the wire the first time, unseating jockey Santo Sanjur.
When Sanjur failed to get to his feet immediately and required medical attention, outriders flagged the racing jockeys to pull up their horses immediately around the final turn. Sanjur's mount, the 5-year-old Ransom the Moon gelding Ransomware, was apprehended and according to Keeneland, 'was transported back to the barn as a courtesy ride for precautionary reasons'. Keeneland reported the gelding was evaluated and has minor abrasions.
Sanjur was placed on a stretcher by the Keenland EMT team and is currently being evaluated by UK Heathcare. He was reportedly complaining of pain in his hip.
A graded stakes-winning jockey, Sanjur has ridden 874 winners in his career for $22,392,376 in earnings.
Refunds were given for the exacta, trifecta, and superfecta as well as win, place, and show wagers. For the Pick 3s that began in race 1 and 2, the double that began in race 2, the Pick 4 that began in race 2, and the Pick 5 that began in race 1, the no-contest race becomes an "All" for wagering purposes.
