Wimberley Bloodstock went to $375,000 to acquire the stakes-winning Maclean's Music filly Unsung Melody during the fourth session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale Nov. 8.
Consigned as Hip 1260 by Grovendale Sales, agent, Unsung Melody had recently retired from the track after racing for WSS Racing and trainer John Ortiz. An earner of $383,934, the 4-year-old placed in this year's Winning Colors Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs before scoring a 2 3/4-length victory in the $100,000 Saylorville Stakes at Prairie Meadows. She registered a 101 Equibase Speed Figure for her black-type win.
"She's an absolutely beautiful filly and she was great on that track too—she earned every bit (of her $375,000 price)," said Bill Simon of WSS Racing. "She's just been a joy to own. We're really happy to see her go to a good place to be a mom."
Wimberley Bloodstock's Brendan Jacobson purchased the mare to add to his growing broodmare band. Unsung Melody is the third and most expensive purchase Wimberley has made at the sale thus far. Jacobson bought Golden Review (Hip 194) for $295,000 Nov. 5 and Seeking Mo Jewel (Hip 1186) for $100,000 earlier in Friday's session.
"She just had a lovely physical and she's a proven runner. She's fast," Jacobson said of Unsung Melody. "She's been on my list; I really liked her. We think she'll make a top-class broodmare. She'll most likely (be bred) to someone pretty nice."
Jacobson said he'd like to expand his broodmare band to 30 mares for his commercial breeding operation. At last fall's Keeneland November Sale, Wimberley picked up Holiday Soiree (Harlan's Holiday), the dam of this year's Derby City Distaff Stakes (G1) victress Vahva, for $300,000 in foal to City of Light .
