The sire Collected , owner Little Red Feather, and trainer Phil D'Amato enjoyed a banner day Oct. 6 at Santa Anita Park with a pair of grade 3 wins that also celebrated the legacy of the late breeder Brereton Jones.
A son and daughter of the third-crop sire based at Airdrie Stud near Midway, Ky. swept the day's two grade 3 stakes races as Iron Man Cal was put up in the $100,000 Zuma Beach Stakes (G3T) for juveniles on the turf while Thought Process took the sister race, the $100,000 Surfer Girl Stakes (G3T) for 2-year-old fillies on the turf.
Little Red Feather is the owner of Iron Man Cal and co-owner of Thought Process and D'Amato trains both winners. Jones, who launched Airdrie Stud, is the breeder of both winners.
Iron Man Cal made his stakes debut Sunday after a 2 1/2-length victory second time out in a one-mile maiden special weight race Sept. 7 on the Del Mar turf. Iron Man Cal would stay at a mile on the turf Sunday but there would be no easy win this time around as he finished just behind Artislas at the finish. But that one would be placed third by the stewards for a bump in the stretch in the race that finished with a three-horse photo.
Sabertooth would be placed second after Artislas was moved to third. The two minor placers entered out of the Sept. Del Mar Juvenile Turf Stakes (G3T) where Artislas won by a half-length over runner-up Sabertooth.
Antonio Fresu was aboard Iron Man Cal and the race was completed in 1:34.95 on firm turf.
Iron Man Cal is the first stakes winner for the unraced Kitten's Joy mare Joyful Dreams.
Earlier on the card Thought Process made quick work of her five other juvenile filly rivals in the Surfer Girl as she opened a clear advantage early through a half-mile in :47.69 and then drew off late to post a 4 1/2-length victory.
Campaigned by Little Red Feather Racing, Madaket Stables, and the estate of her breeder, Brereton Jones, Thought Process landed her second straight stakes score as she entered off a two-length score in last month's Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf Stakes. Sent off the 1-5 favorite, Thought Process completed the mile test in 1:34.34 on firm turf under Hector Berrios.
She was followed home in second by Casalu, who also boasts a grade 3 placing on dirt, and Tigerish, who landed her first graded stakes placing.
Kentucky-bred Thought Process is the first starter for the stakes-winning Creative Cause mare Creative Thinking.
