Chi Chi became first-crop sire and grade 1 winner Audible's first black-type stakes winner when she broke through in the Sept. 24 $55,000 E.L. Gaylord Memorial Stakes at Remington Park.
Making her third start for trainer Herman Wilensky, Chi Chi chased the early pace in third early under jockey Edwin Gonzalez before running down the leaders late for a 1 1/4-length score. She completed the 6 1/2 furlongs on a fast main track in 1:17.98.
Bred in Kentucky by Frances Weiner, Chi Chi is the second stakes winner produced from the Candy Ride mare Simply Confection. She is a half sibling to grade 2 winner Simplification (Not This Time ), who ran fourth in last year's Kentucky Derby (G1).
Chi Chi, owned by Ernest Frohboese, was unplaced in two starts on the turf at Del Mar prior to her victory Sunday night.
Audible currently ranks among the top ten freshman stallions in the country with nine first-crop winners. The earner of $2,130,520 on the track retired in 2020 after posting wins in the 2019 Florida Derby (G1), Holy Bull Stakes (G3), and Cherokee Run Stakes. He was third in the 2019 Kentucky Derby.
