Juddmonte Stallion Zamindar Dies at 32
Smart racehorse and decorated stallion Zamindar has died at the age of 32, Juddmonte reported July 10. A Kentucky-bred son of Gone West bred by the operation, he was a brother of the champion Dewhurst Stakes (G1) and Two Thousand Guineas Stakes (G1) winner Zafonic, and was also sent to Andre Fabre's stable. Zamindar claimed his biggest victory in the 1996 Prix de Cabourg (G3) and was placed in the Prix Morny (G1) and Prix de Salamandre (G1) that year before finishing fifth in the 1997 Two Thousand Guineas at Newmarket. Zamindar was retired to Banstead Manor Stud in 1998 and made a great impression as both a sire and a broodmare sire. He sired five group 1-winning fillies headed by the unbeaten Zarkava, as well as Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (G1) heroine Zenda. Timepiece (GB) and Darjina were also of high quality. Zarkava produced top stallion Zarak (FR), while Zenda is responsible for Juddmonte's leading sire Kingman (GB). Zamindar's listed-winning daughter Cinnamon Bay delivered New Bay (GB). Simon Mockridge, Juddmonte's United Kingdom general manager, said: "It was with great sadness after 28 years at Banstead Manor Stud that we said farewell to Zamindar. "We remember him for his power and size, but above all else it was his amazing character that meant so much to those that worked closely with him. He will be greatly missed by all at Juddmonte."
