Danon Bourbon Sidelined for Remainder of Season
Danox Co.'s Kentucky Derby (G1) fifth-place finisher Danon Bourbon will likely miss the remainder of the 2026 season after emerging from the May 2 race with a knee chip. The news was officially reported by Netkeiba, a leading source of Japanese racing news. Several translations will describe the injury as a "fracture" as there is no precise word to differentiate, but Churchill Downs Asia representative Kate Hunter, who oversaw the Japan-based horses at Churchill Downs, clarified on X that the injury is indeed a bone chip. Upon returning to Japan, Danon Bourbon underwent customary quarantine at the Japan Racing Association Horse Racing School in Shiroi, Chiba. Now that he has cleared quarantine, trainer Manabu Ikezoe told Netkeiba that the son of Maxfield will head to the Shadai Clinic in Hokkaido for surgery to remove the bone fragments. Ikezoe went on to say that the timing of Danon Bourbon's comeback is currently undetermined, although they are likely to dedicate the remainder of the year for him to rest. Prior to the Kentucky Derby, where he prompted a quick pace and hung on gamely, Kentucky-bred Danon Bourbon swept his first three starts in Japan, including the Fukuryu Stakes. Meanwhile, UAE Derby (G2) winner and Kentucky Derby eighth-place finisher Wonder Dean (JPN) and Churchill Downs Stakes (G1) winner T O Elvis have also returned to Japan and are set for a traditional summer break for trainer Daisuke Takayanagi. Many top racehorses in Japan take the summer months off to avoid the heat. T O Elvis is targeting a start in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) Oct. 31 at Keeneland and could potentially target a prep race at the new Belmont Park in the fall, Takayanagi's assistant Yuto Kumagai told BloodHorse May 3.
