Horse Racing Women’s Association Expands to Canada

The Horse Racing Women's Association (HRWA) will expand its "Day at the Races" series to Century Mile Racetrack and Casino on Saturday, July 11 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, for an afternoon of racing, networking, education, and community-building centered around women in horse racing. Guests will hear from esteemed women in racing during a featured panel discussion, participate in a handicapping seminar and contest, enjoy an afternoon at the races, and connect with fellow industry professionals and fans throughout the day. "Century Mile is proud to host the Horse Racing Women's Association as they bring this exciting event to Western Canada," said Ken Maheden, General Manager of Century Mile Racetrack and Casino. "The strength and presence of women in Alberta's racing industry is something we are incredibly proud of. At Century Mile, women account for 33 percent of our Thoroughbred trainers, the highest representation in Canada. Events like this play an important role in recognizing those contributions and highlighting the impact women continue to have across our sport." The event's featured "HerWay Talk" panel discussion will include Jodie Vella-Gregory, the Vice President of Industry Relations at 1/ST Racing; Barbara Anderson-Heads, Award-Winning Thoroughbred Trainer; Hazel Bennett, President, Borders Racing Stable & Steward, Jockey Club of Canada; Jodie Hiesinger, Assistant Trainer & 2026 Recipient, Western Canada's Top Backstretch Award, and moderator Stephanie Hronis, Owner of Hronis Racing. Based on the 2025 trainer standings from Equibase, Alberta demonstrates one of the strongest representations of women in Thoroughbred horse racing in North America. At Century Mile Racetrack, women account for approximately 33 percent of trainers, while Rocky Mountain Turf Club (Alberta's "B" Thoroughbred race track) sees roughly 28 percent. Out-of-town guests will enjoy a seamless and convenient travel experience, as Century Mile is located just steps from Edmonton International Airport (YEG). A complimentary shuttle service is available to the host hotel, Fairfield by Marriott Edmonton International Airport, which also provides direct shuttle transportation to and from the racetrack. With support from Horse Racing Alberta, guests are able to enjoy a limited-time $20 savings for early-bird purchasing. This offer is available until June 9.
