Spendthrift Goes to $900K for Omaha Beach Filly at OBS
During the April 14 opening session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, Spendthrift Farm went to $900,000 to secure a filly (Hip 74) by their leading fourth-crop stallion Omaha Beach. Consigned by Tom McCrocklin, agent, the speedy filly highlighted the first day of the under-tack show last week, breezing a quarter-mile in :20 4/5. "The way she breezed, she did it pretty effortlessly, and handled everything really well. Good mind on her, strong, classy filly," said Ned Toffey, general manager of Spendthrift Farm. Hip 74 was bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, and is the second foal out of the More Than Ready mare Ready for Charm, who is a half sister to two graded stakes performers and two stakes winners. The filly's page received a timely update during the opening day of the Keeneland spring meet, when Percy's Bar, out of a half sister to Ready for Charm, won the Ashland Stakes (G1). Spendthrift Farm is quite familiar with the daughter of Upstart, as its homebred filly, Tommy Jo, was placed above Percy's Bar in last fall's Alcibiades Stakes (G1) via disqualification because of interference in the stretch. McCrocklin purchased the filly as a yearling at the 2025 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearlings Sale for $400,000 out of the Taylor Made Sales Agency consignment. "We've had good luck buying off Tom," Toffey said. "She did things the right way. Really, nothing not to like about her. "I can't say she looks like Kopion, but I did keep thinking about Kopion when we were looking at her. I think she's got a little bit more of a More Than Ready hind leg on her, but she's a big, impressive filly." Kopion is the all-time leading runner for Omaha Beach and winner of two grade 1 races. Her career was highlighted by a win in last year's Derby City Distaff Stakes (G1) over the well-respected Hope Road, Ways and Means, and eventual 2025 Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) winner Scylla. She retired last fall with a record of 5-3-0 from 10 career starts, and earnings totaling $1,204,700. "It's a wonderful pedigree, and she'll be a nice addition to the broodmare band no matter what she does," Toffey said of Hip 74. Omaha Beach has sired nine graded stakes winners to date, three of them achieving grade 1 status. He stands at Spendthrift Farm for an advertised fee of $75,000. Earlier in the session, Spendthrift partnered with Delta Squad Racing to land Hip 11, a colt by Curlin for $850,000. The colt breezed a furlong in :10 1/5 during the under-tack show for Jimbo and Torie Gladwell's Top Line Sales consignment. "I thought his breeze was very good; he moved well and galloped out," said Liz Crow, speaking on behalf of Josh Isner's Delta Squad Racing. "We just thought he had the profile of that two-turn dirt colt that everyone is looking for. "This is a breeze show, so we're obviously looking a lot at the breeze and how he did it, and his gallop out and how he moved. That was what really got us on him. He's a big leggy colt and just had the look of a two-turn horse." Crow said a trainer has yet to be determined. When asked what the goals for the colt are, Crow responded, "(Kentucky) Derby, like everybody. He wants two-turn dirt colts, and this horse obviously had that profile and pedigree. Spendthrift has the half brother, Tapit's Legacy, and they like him quite a bit." Tapit's Legacy, owned by Spendthrift Farm and Epic Horses, broke his maiden last summer at Saratoga Race Course by 5 lengths. He has been on the work tab regularly at Palm Beach Downs for trainer Todd Pletcher. Spendthrift Farm and Epic Racing purchased the colt at the 2025 Ocala Breeders' Sales March Sale of 2-year-olds in training for $550,000 from de Meric Sales. Hip 11 was bred in Kentucky by Corser Thoroughbreds, and is the third foal of the Violence mare, Peace Corps, who is a half sister to Her Smile, who won the 2011 Prioress Stakes (G1). Her Smile produced six winners from seven foals, including multiple graded stakes winner Pink Sands, who won the 2019 Rampart Stakes (G3) and the 2020 Inside Information Stakes (G2), both at Gulfstream Park. He was purchased for $200,000 at the 2025 Keeneland September Yearling Sale by Lugamo Racing Stables.
