OBS April Sale Poised to Keep March Momentum Rolling
Fresh off a record-breaking March Sale, Ocala Breeders' Sales is set to continue the momentum with its Spring 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale being held April 14-17. A total of 1124 juveniles have been cataloged for the four-day sale. During the six days of under-tack shows, April 6-11, a total of six horses breezed a furlong in a sharp :09 3/5. Two of those are consigned by Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds, agent—Hip 570, a filly by 2021 champion male sprinter Jackie's Warrior, and Hip 1056, a colt by 2022 Horse of the Year Flightline. READ: All Eyes on Hartley/DeRenzo's Flightline Colt at OBS "I've seen some nice horses here, and people are telling me there are some really nice horses here, a lot of nice fillies," said Randy Hartley of Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds. "It should be strong. Some really good horses came out of this sale last year, and all of the Breeders' Cup horses that came out of this sale last year, it's getting to where people are getting more confident buying on this track now." Shisospicy, winner of the 2025 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1T), was the 2025 flag-bearer for OBS April Sale graduates. The daughter of Mitole was also crowned 2025 champion female sprinter. She was consigned by Hartley/DeRenzo at the 2024 OBS April Sale, where she failed to meet her reserve on a $300,000 final bid. The filly breezed a furlong during the under-tack show in :09 3/5. Hartley said while the market is certainly seeing a lot of polarization, there are plenty of opportunities to secure a valuable horse. "Everyone's climbing on the same horses for sure. With 1,200 horses, it may be a little more spread out than the last sale. I think we could have seven to 10 seven-figure horses here." Five horses breezed a co-fastest quarter-mile in :20 2/5 during the under-tack preview, with two coming from the barn of Tom McCrocklin—Hip 851, a filly by Oscar Performance and Hip 915, a filly by Liam's Map; two from (Jesse) Hoppel—Hip 1037, a filly by Early Voting and Hip 1070, a filly by Drain the Clock; and Hip 1181, a colt by Golden Pal, consigned by Richardson Bloodstock, agent. The Spring sale has produced numerous grade 1 winners over the years, including recent Blue Grass Stakes (G1) winner Further Ado, who sits second on the Kentucky Derby (G1) leader board. Tampa Bay Derby (G3) winner The Puma and Southwest Stakes (G3) winner Silent Tactic are also OBS Spring sale grads, who sit sixth and seventh on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard, respectively. "The 2-year-old market is getting stronger in that aspect of bringing better horses to the sales, and it's showing up on the racetrack," said Torie Gladwell of Top Line Sales. "We're getting a lot of graded stakes winners, and we have four (contenders) for the Kentucky Derby this year. "I would say supply and demand (is a big part of it). The foal crop is getting smaller, and I feel like people are bringing better horses. We do a better job buying horses than we did probably 10 years ago. We've learned from our mistakes, and I think a lot of other pinhookers have, too. The agents all say there are some really nice horses here." Jimbo and Torie Gladwell's Top Line Sales had a successful under-tack showing, topped by Hip 1221, a filly by Girvin, who breezed a co-fastest furlong in :09 3/5. Six of their juveniles breezed a furlong in :09 4/5. A slew of first-crop sires are represented in the catalog, including Corniche, Cyberknife, Drain the Clock, Early Voting, Golden Pal, Flightline, Jackie's Warrior, and Life Is Good. Golden Pal and Life Is Good were represented by their first winners last week when the Wesley Ward trainees, Waggley and Skara Brae won maiden special weight races at Keeneland. Colts by Corniche and Drain the Clock reached the seven-figure mark last month at the OBS March sale, bringing $1.35 million and $1.1 million, respectively. "This year is just a really special year because there are so many good freshman sires, and they're all throwing nice-looking horses," said Nelson Arroyo of Arroyo Bloodstock, who brings a draft of seven horses to the April sale, including two by Life Is Good. "We're going to have some really good sires come out of this year. I think it's a really strong market. Purses keep on going up, and I think that we're going to keep getting stronger. There are a lot of good horses in this sale." During last year's four-day sale, 638 horses sold for gross receipts of $88,496,500, including private sales. The auction produced a record average of $138,709, with a median of $65,000. A total of 127 horses failed to meet their reserve, resulting in an RNA rate of 16.6%. A colt (Hip 1094) by Tiz The Law topped last year's edition of the sale, bringing $1.5 million from Spendthrift Farm, St Elias Stable, and West Point Thoroughbreds. He was consigned by Steven Venosa's SGV Thoroughbreds, who also sold the second-highest price colt of the auction, Hip 601, a colt by Gun Runner for $1.45 million to Kerri Radcliffe, agent for Memo Racing. The highest-priced filly (Hip 578) was also by Tiz The Law and brought $1.05 million from Mahmud Mouni. She was consigned by Kings Equine, agent. The sale kicks off April 14 at 10:30 a.m. ET with Hips 1-306 set to head to the ring. As of Monday evening, OBS had reported 76 outs.
