The Puma Highlights Florida's Tartan Farms Legacy

Few breeding programs in recent history have done more to shape the modern North American dirt runner than that of Florida's intertwined Tartan Farms and Francis A. Genter Stable, both under the management of John Nerud. This was primarily achieved through the combination, and later recombination, of a handful of key strains, notably the stallions Rough'n Tumble (through champions Dr. Fager and My Dear Girl) and Intentionally (through In Reality and champion Ta Wee), and the mares Aspidistra (dam of Dr. Fager and Ta Wee) and Cequillo. The latest tribute to the program was paid March 7, when The Puma pounced at the head of the stretch to claim the Tampa Bay Derby (G3). This was the first victory for The Puma, who had finished second to Chief Wallabee—beaten a neck in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) on his next start—when the pair debuted in a 7-furlong Gulfstream Park maiden special weight Jan. 10, then finished third in the Sam F. Davis Stakes Feb. 7. The Puma is from the first crop of Essential Quality. Only the third horse this century—following Lookin At Lucky in 2009-10 and American Pharoah in 2014-15—to earn an Eclipse Award as champion male of his generation at 2 and 3, Essential Quality went 3-for-3 in his first season, his final two victories of the year coming in the 2020 Breeders' Futurity (G1) and Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1). Although he forfeited his undefeated record at 3, Essential Quality demonstrated exceptional consistency at the highest level at that age, with five starts bringing triumphs in the Southwest Stakes (G3), Blue Grass Stakes (G2), Jim Dandy Stakes (G2), Belmont Stakes (G1), and Travers Stakes (G1), and thirds in the Kentucky Derby (G1)—where he crossed the line just a length behind the first home, the subsequently disqualified Medina Spirit—and the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1). Saturday's victory made the The Puma the fifth stakes winner from the first crop of Essential Quality, following My World, successful in the 2025 Nashua Stakes and Jan. 3 Jerome Stakes; this year's Black Gold Stakes scorer, Black Hornet; Chopsticks, who took the 2025 Ellis Park Debutante Stakes; and Essential Time, winner of the 2025 Clever Trevor Stakes. The Puma is the first foal of his dam, the Declaration of War mare Eve of War, a winner in maiden special weight and allowance company, and also third in the 2020 Monmouth Oaks (G3). The Puma's third dam, Bedanken (by the Theatrical son, Geri), was an accomplished performer who won 11 races, nine black type, including the 2002 Valley View Stakes (G3T), 2004 Modesty Handicap (G3T), 2004 Bayou Breeders' Cup Handicap (G3T), and 2002 Honeybee Stakes (G3). Only one of Bedanken's nine winners earned black type, the 2018 Silverbulletday Stakes third Missive. However, her Broken Vow daughter Keep Your Promise, a sister to Special Thanks, the granddam of The Puma, is dam of the current 3-year-old Speed Merchant, a standout in New Mexico-bred company, where he's won five of seven starts to date, including the 2025 New Mexico State Fair Thoroughbred Futurity. Bendanken is half sister to the 2008 American One Thousand Guineas captress, Much Obliged, subsequently dam of English juvenile group winner Syphax. The dam of Bendanken, the wining Strawberry Road mare Danka, is half sister to Ganges, a group/graded winner in France and the United States; to multiple stakes winner Abrojo; and to Apolda. A daughter of Bendanken's grandsire, Theatrical, Apolda won the 1996 Joe Namath Handicap (G3T), 1995 Cardinal Handicap (G3T), and 1996 Jenny Wiley Stakes (G3T), she figures as third dam of Argentine grade 1 scorer Giant Killing, and third dam of graded scorer Cozze Up Lady, herself dam of grade 1 scorer Kimari and of the Tiz the Law gelding Michael Scofield, winner of the listed Tuwaiq Cup in Saudi Arabia Feb. 14. Via The Puma's sixth dam, Satania, a stakes winner and classic-placed in Canada, the family goes back to the noted tap-root mare Legendra. A foal of 1944, Legendra is now ancestress of 213 stakes winners, 22 of them group or grade 1, including Shareef Dancer, champion at 3 in England and Ireland and winner of the 1983 Irish Derby (G1), and Zenyatta, Horse of the Year in 2010, and champion older female 2008-10. The Puma is one of two stakes winners from four starters by Tapit and his sons out of Declaration of War mares. The cross of Tapit and sons out of mares from the sire line of Declaration of War's sire, War Front, has five other stakes winners including graded scorers Frost At Dawn and Personal Best. Overall, War Front and Tapit have already combined for 16 individual stakes winners, also including grade 1 winner Halladay. To understand the success of the combination, and particularly regarding The Puma, we return to the influence of strains emanating from the Tartan Farm/Francis A. Genter Farm programs. To begin: Tapit is out of the minor stakes winner Tap Your Heels. She is by Unbridled, a son of Fappiano (his dam Killaloe is by Dr. Fager out of a daughter of Cequillo). Unbridled's granddam is by In Reality (giving him a double of Rough'n Tumble), and his fourth dam is Aspidistra, also the dam of Dr. Fager. In Tap Your Heels' family, her second dam, Moon Glitter, is also by In Reality. Many of these ancestors appear in the pedigree of War Front. He is out of Starry Dreamer, a daughter of champion sprinter Rubiano, who is by Fappiano and out of Ruby Slippers, the dam of Tap Your Heels. So Rubiano and Tap Your Heels are closely related half siblings. As far as The Puma is concerned, the combination of Tap Your Heels and Rubiano is only the beginning of the story. Looking at the pedigree of Essential Quality, his fourth dam, graded stakes winner Jeano, is by Fappiano out of a mare by In Reality, so again inbred to Rough'n Tumble. Additionally, The Puma's second dam, Special Thanks, is by Broken Vow, a son of Unbridled. Broken Vow adds his own Tartan/Genter influence as a son of Unbridled out of a mare by Nijinsky II, as is Tap Your Heels (the pair being 3x3 in the pedigree of The Puma). Additionally, Rubiano is out of a Nijinsky II mare and Essential Quality's granddam, Contrive is by Storm Cat, who is a son of Storm Bird (who has a pedigree similar to Nijinsky II). As noted earlier, Rubiano is by Fappiano and Contrive is out of a Fappiano mare.
