Winick, Trainer of Brocco, Dies at 76

Randy Winick, trainer of the 1993 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Brocco, died Feb. 15 at age 76. He trained many stakes winners throughout his career, including grade 1 winners Dontstop Themusic, Country Queen, Mitterand, and Spence Bay. Brocco, who also won the 1994 Santa Anita Derby (G1), was Winick's highest-earning horse, amassing career earnings of $1,003,550. He went on to finish fourth in the 1984 Kentucky Derby (G1), behind Go for Gin. Dontstop Themusic hit the board in 34 of her 43 career starts for Winick, earning $963,469. She highlighted Winick's most successful year in 1985, with wins in the Vanity Handicap (G1), Spinster Stakes (G1), and Chula Vista Handicap (G3). She finished third in that year's Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1). Winick's career spanned from 1974-2005 according to Equibase, with his best year coming in 1985, when he racked up earnings of $1,280,486. He won a total of 340 races from 2,346 career starts, and earnings of $10,281,712. Near the end of his career, he served as a steward for the California Horse Racing Board. According to an obituary by Landmark Funeral Home, he is survived by his daughter, Tierney Rae Winick, and sister Stacey Winick. Services will be private.
