Cogburn Full Brother Bound for Japan
Near the end of the March 11 opening session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales March 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, Hip 212, a full brother to the world-record-setting Cogburn, brought $650,000 from Japan's Katsumi Yoshida. The chestnut colt was a $300,000 purchase by his consignors, Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds, at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The son of Not This Time breezed a quarter-mile in :21 1/5 March 6 during the under tack show. He was bred in Kentucky by Taylor Made Stallions, Clark Brewster, John Cummins et al., Joel Politi, Brian Moss, and Travis White. "He was a beautiful horse," said Randy Hartley of Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds. "He did everything that he was supposed to do. He's the dream horse to train. He was just so light on his feet. "We love the stallion Not This Time, we had a horse named No More Time that we qualified for the (Kentucky) Derby last year. He got hurt in his last work, but anyway, very similar horses. I'm so tickled he's going to Japan. We've sold those guys some really good horses, so it's exciting." "(Hip 212) was a very nice walker," said Shingo Hashimoto, who signed the ticket on behalf of Yoshida. Yoshida's Northern Farm is one of the most prominent racing and breeding operations in Japan. "He looked pretty fast (in his breeze)," Hashimoto said. "When we inspected him, the way he walked was very nice, so we really liked him. We're going to take him to Japan, hopefully, he'll do good like his brother (Cogburn)." "I feel like I've got a couple on the last day that should sell really well too. We'll just keep trucking on," Hartley said. Hoppel Rewarded with $350K Pinhook When the hammer fell at $350,000 for Hip 19, a filly by Connect, Jesse Hoppel of Hoppel and Edge Investments were richly rewarded for their $20,000 pinhook from the 2024 Fasig-Tipton's The July Sale. Bought by Edge Investments at the July Sale, the filly breezed a quarter-mile in :20 4/5 on the first day of the under tack show March 6, the co-fastest time at that distance that day. "That was a tough day," Hoppel said on the strong headwind on the first day of the under tack show. "The filly has breezed really good at the farm on the dirt, and we had a lot of confidence coming in here with her. So many people were intimidated by the wind and didn't want to breeze in a quarter because it's laboring for the horses, and she was able to get through it and then gallop out nice at the end." The bay filly was purchased by Breeze Easy. She was bred in Kentucky by Frankfort Park Farm, and is out of the stakes-placed mare Catsadiva. "She's a good physical athlete," Hoppel said. "She was kind of what we were looking for, to mature into good 2-year-olds and racehorses in the end. "I have a number of nice fillies here. For whatever reason, we've ended up with quite a shed row of fillies. Tomorrow we have a nice Yaupon (Hip 373), and then we have a really nice Vekoma (Hip 673). We look to sell some nice fillies here this week and see what happens." Terry Stephens Racing Lands Pair of $400k Juveniles Terry Stephens Racing went to $400,000 for a pair of well-bred 2-year-olds from Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbred's consignment. Hip 4, a colt by Into Mischief, comes from an active family out of the Candy Ride (ARG) mare Candy Drawer, who is a half sister to grade 1 winner Harmonious. The bay colt is a full brother to three graded stakes performers, including Into Chocolate, winner of the 2020 Chillingworth Stakes (G3). Into Chocolate's second foal, a colt by Munnings consigned as Hip 219, brought $340,000 from Donato Lanni, agent for Frank Fletcher Racing Operation, later on in the sale. Hip 4 was bred in Kentucky by Pam and Martin Wygod. He breezed a furlong in :10 1/5 during the under tack show. The entity also purchased Hip 133, a filly by the late Uncle Mo. She is out of the stakes-winning mare Feel That Fire, making her a half sister to multiple grade 1 winner Mind Control, and multiple graded stakes-placed Goddess of Fire. Feel That Fire is a half sister to stakes winner and graded stakes-placed King for a Day and a full sister to stakes winner Ima Jersey Girl. Hip 133 breezed a quarter-mile in :21 2/5. She was bred in Kentucky by Red Oak Stable who also bred grade 1 winner Unbridled Mo.
