Blue-Blooded Broodmares Entered in Tatts February Sale
Broodmares being offered at the Tattersalls February Sale Jan. 30-31 are well worth a second look given the auction's reputation for selling classic- or group 1-producing dams for affordable prices. Frequential, the dam of last year's Irish Derby (G1) hero and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) third Los Angeles(IRE), was picked up for 48,000 guineas by BBA Ireland at the sale in 2017 as an unraced 3-year-old from the draft of Godolphin, while the dam of fellow 2024 classic star Metropolitan(FR) went for even less from the same source. Like Frequential, Alianza was an unraced filly at the start of her 3-year-old season when she made just 800 guineas to Stuart McPhee two years earlier. Jawlaat, the dam of last year's Dubai Turf (G1T) scorer and 2025 Saudi Cup (G1) possible Facteur Cheval(IRE), sold to McCracken Farms for 18,000 guineas from Shadwell's draft in 2016. She too was unraced and had just turned 3 when going through the ring at Park Paddocks. There are some particularly well-bred mares on offer at Park Paddocks once again. Among them is Barton Sales' Divisimo (Lot 63), a Dansili sister to 2011 Matron Stakes (G1) winner Emulous (GB). More recently, Emulous became the dam of last year's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe scorer Bluestocking (GB). Another of her full sisters, listed 2005 Criterium de Vitesse winner Daring Diva (GB), is the second dam of Juddmonte's 2021 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Haskell Stakes (G1) winner Mandaloun. Daring Diva is also the second dam of 2024 Oh So Sharp Stakes (G3) winner Merrily, who holds classic entries this year. Far Westfield Farm offers the listed-placed Galileo mare Facade (Lot 18), a sister to recent stakes winner Lily Hart (IRE) and in foal to the exciting Study of Man (IRE). Another choice offering is Hazelwood Bloodstock's Propel (29), a Dubawi (IRE) half sister to three group winners from the family of champion L'Ancresse. The 13-year-old is the dam of two winners and is carrying to promising young sire and 2019 European champion juvenile male Pinatubo (IRE). Godolphin's draft is always one to watch, particularly as the source of the aforementioned classic producers and this year it contains black-type performer Valdivara(IRE) (133), a 4-year-old daughter of Blue Point (IRE) out of a sister to Territories (IRE); Wedding Band (135), an unraced daughter of Lope de Vega (IRE) and the top-class Wuheida (GB); Scarlet Princess (134), a Kingman (GB) daughter of group 1 winner Lady Marian (GER) and half sister to group 2 scorer Loxley (IRE); plus dual listed-winning and group 3-placed Australia (GB) gelding Galashiels (IRE) (124). This is a time where owners and trainers might be thinking about supplementing their squad for the next phases of the flat racing calendar. Among the notable horses in training is Juddmonte's Fire Demon (108), a winner on All-Weather Championships finals day last March, and a half brother to Australian group 2 winner Old Flame (GB) and Tabiti (GB), successful in last season's Dick Poole Stakes (G3). There is also the classy Imperial Fighter (IRE) (187), who was third in the 2022 Irish Two Thousand Guineas (G1). The sale gets under way from midday Jan. 30 and 10 a.m. Jan. 31.
