Stakes Winner Shocking Grey Tops CTBA Sale

Shocking Grey, winner of the $126,500 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint Stakes at Santa Anita Park Jan. 18, sold for $170,000 to top the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Winter Mixed Sale at Fairplex Jan. 21. Shocking Grey, a 6-year-old daughter of Grazen out of the Unbridled's Song mare Seoul Unbridled, was sold from the Checkmate Thoroughbreds consignment for the complete dispersal of Valpredo Farms. The buyer was Francoise DuPuis, agent, for Rockingham Ranch. Shocking Grey has won three of 14 starts and earned $250,750. She was third behind Eddie's New Dream and Stay and Scam in the Fran's Valentine Stakes for state-bred fillies and mares in May 2023, her only stakes appearance prior to Saturday. She was trained by Jeff Mullins. She will now be trained by George Papaprodromou. Shocking Grey's half sister, a yearling by Corniche, sold for $75,000 to Gayle Van Leer, agent. She also was from the Checkmate Thoroughbreds consignment for the complete dispersal of Valpredo Farms. In totals for the sale, 83 horses sold for $1,228,200, an average of $14,798 and median of $8,000. There were 12 buybacks. In last year's sale, 111 sold for $951,100 and an average of $8,568 and median of $6,500 with 25 buybacks. Full results are available online.
