BloodHorse and Keeneland Magazine were recognized with nine awards, including two first-place honors, during the American Horse Publications' Equine Media Awards banquet May 14 in Lexington, held as part of the organization's annual conference.

BloodHorse received first place in the Self-Supported Publication Editorial Design category for art director Catherine Nichols' design and visuals director Anne M. Eberhardt's photos for the "Art As Bridge" feature in the May 2021 issue about artist Jason Dafri Thompson and his work honoring African Americans' contributions to Thoroughbred racing.

Keeneland Magazine took first place in the Self-Supported Publication Personality Profile Single Article category for Maryjean Wall's feature "A Consummate Horsewoman" about Josephine Clay, the daughter-in-law of renowned Kentucky politician Henry Clay.

Nichols also was honored with a second place in the Self-Supported Publication Cover Page Design category for the cover of BloodHorse's November 2021 edition featuring a photo of Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith by Wally Skalij. She received third-place honors as well for editorial design for a feature titled "Bold Course" in the BloodHorse's April 2021 issue about racetrack executive Aidan Butler.

Eberhardt received a second place, too, in Editorial Action Photograph category for her image of Tiz the Bomb winning the Castle & Key Bourbon Stakes (G2T) at Keeneland that accompanied a Nov. 5 BloodHorse Daily article titled "Americans Seek Third Straight BC Juvenile Turf Win."

Other awards for BloodHorse included two in the News Reporting Related Feature Single Article: a second place for features editor Frank Angst's article titled "Some Six Months After Derby, Medina Spirit Case Stalls," and a third-place award to author Milt Toby for his "The Path Behind and Ahead: Due Process, the Derby, and the Dancer's Image Playbook" that ran in the July 2021 edition of the magazine.

BloodHorse Daily was honored with second-place honors in Publishing Media Equine-related Single Issue or Multi-Issue Electronic Publication category for its May 2 and Nov. 7 editions.

BloodHorse magazine received one of two awards given in the General Excellence Self-Supported Print Publication (circulation under 15,000) category, getting an honorable mention for its June 2021 and October 2021 editions.

American Horse Publications has been awarding excellence in equine media since 1976. This year's competition attracted 583 entries from 102 AHP members. Finalists in one or more of the 52 classes included 36 Publishing Media members, 17 Media Professional members, and 14 Business members.

"Twenty professional judges describe their task as challenging due to the high level of competitive entries," said Chris Brune, AHP executive director and awards contest coordinator. "One judge asked to convey to the participants that the difference between placing and not placing is virtually imperceptible this year for most entries."
