A Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) rematch between Gamine and Bell's the One, who finished 1-3 in the 2020 race at Keeneland, will not take place when the $1 million race is renewed Nov. 6 at Del Mar.
Neil Pessin, trainer of Bell's the One, said Oct. 22 that his filly would not travel to California for the seven-furlong race and would instead await the $300,000 Dream Supreme Stakes at Churchill Downs Nov. 13. Pessin has suggested since the summer that she might not compete in the Breeders' Cup World Championships due to equine plane travel that is not as convenient in years past and with champion Gamine appearing a heavy favorite.
"Right now the plan is maybe to run her another year," he said. "The Breeders' Cup is at Keeneland next year, and hopefully we can make it there."
The 5-year-old daughter of Majesticperfection, last-out winner of the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes (G2) at Keeneland for Lothenbach Stables, breezed four furlongs Friday in :47 4/5 at Churchill Downs. Pessin said she would work another two times before the six-furlong Dream Supreme in the middle of next month.
"Then she'll get a little vacation and get ready for the Madison (G1) at Keeneland next (spring)," Pessin indicated.
The West Coast-based Gamine appears odds-on in the Filly & Mare Sprint against a short field likely led by Ce Ce and Bella Sofia, both of whom also worked Friday, at Santa Anita Park and Belmont Park, respectively.
