Obituary: Hockensmith Dies, Campaigned Clear Conscience

Owner/breeder Mary Anne Noel Hockensmith died July 26 at her Woodlake Farm home near Frankfort, Ky. She was 97. Family noted in her obituary that, "She spent her youth learning to ride horses with her father and tending to the farm," later adding, "A true farm woman, horses were her passion and she loved riding, reading the stud books, foal watching, and seeing her horses on the track." One of those horses was Clear Conscience, an Ohio-bred daughter of Court Recess that won stakes at all three Ohio tracks at the time of her 1977-79 racing career: Beulah Park, Thistledown, and River Downs. Clear Conscience was trained by Kenneth H. Davis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church July 30 at noon.
