Zenyatta Loses 2021 Foal by Candy Ride

Multi-champion and 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta has lost the 2021 filly foal by Lane's End stallion Candy Ride (ARG) that she was carrying, Zenyatta.com announced in a Jan. 26 blog post. "We at Team Zenyatta and Lane's End Farm are deeply saddened to share that Zenyatta lost her 2021 foal early this year," it read. "She had been carrying a second Candy Ride filly, and we grieve the loss of this precious life. Thankfully, Zenyatta remains in excellent health and is doing very well." Zenyatta, a 17-year-old daughter of Street Cry (IRE) who resides at Lane's End Farm in Versailles, Ky., is the dam of four registered foals, none victorious. Her first two, Cozmic One (Bernardini) and Ziconic (Tapit), have both been retired to second careers as off-track Thoroughbreds. She also has a 4-year-old daughter named Zellda (Medaglia d'Oro) who has not yet raced and a short yearling filly named Zilkha (Candy Ride). Zellda last worked during the summer. Zellda was Zenyatta's first foal since losing two, both by War Front, in 2014 and 2016. The 2014 filly was euthanized as a weanling after a paddock accident and the 2016 colt died a few days after birth due to complications of meconium aspiration syndrome. In 2018, Zenyatta aborted a foal by Into Mischief. Trained by John Shirreffs for Jerry and Ann Moss, Zenyatta, champion older mare in 2008-10, and won the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) in 2009. Her only loss in 20 starts came when second to Blame in the 2010 Classic.
