K P Sales Continues to Build Momentum

Consignors have weathered difficult year with aplomb

K P Sales might be among the newer names when it comes to the consignor ranks, but its principals—Jay Goodwin and Meredith Krupp—are no strangers to the sales landscape. Goodwin, formerly a partner with Select Sales who also works full-time for Eaton Sales, launched K P Sales last year with Krupp who worked for Machmer Hall and Select Sales before the latter ceased operations in 2020.

Despite challenging circumstances, launching a new business amid a global pandemic has proved fortuitous for Goodwin and Krupp. K P Sales was the leading consignor and sold the sale topper, a $70,000 Gormley filly, at the Equine Sales Company's Consignor Select Yearling Sale in Louisiana last August. For an encore, they teamed with Eaton Sales which topped all consignors and sold the $120,000 sale-topping colt by Klimt at the Texas Summer Yearling and Horses of Racing Age Sale at Lone Star Park four days later.

"It was scary," Goodwin said of starting K P Sales during such a tumultuous year. "But as it turns out, it couldn't have gone any better. Being a part of a large operation like Eaton is flattering and I had a great first year working with them. Meredith and I have a huge clientele and we are big in regional markets like Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. Our clientele has a lot of needs and K P was created to serve them.

"We hit the Louisiana sale hard and we did the same in Texas," Goodwin added. "Then we had a good October sale here at OBS, which is also a great place to sell state-breds."

The couple is getting married on May 29, but first, there is the business of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Winter Mixed Sale and K P Sales has plenty of high-quality stock remaining to go through the ring during the sale's final session Jan. 27.

"It's a busy time for us," Goodwin said. "While the countdown to getting married is on, we still have this sale and the February sale (Fasig-Tipton's Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale Feb. 8-9) and then we'll concentrate on the wedding and the 100 mares we will be breeding on the farm this year."

Among the standouts in his consignment, Goodwin singled out Hip 474, a chestnut filly by Practical Joke  out of the winning Arch mare Raving About You, a half sister to stakes winner Class and Cash. Bred in Kentucky by Ryan Jude Robicheaux, the filly is from the family of grade 1 winner Nany's Sweep.

"Everyone seems to have a good Practical Joke in their barn," Goodwin said. "This one looks like she will be an OBS March-type."

Another popular horse in the consignment is Hip 724, a bay filly by Gormley out of Julia's Pride (by Proud Citizen). A Kentucky homebred for Goodwin and Krupp, the filly hails from the family of multiple stakes winner Zada Belle.

"She looks like she is going to be rocket-fast. I haven't had a bad Gormley yet and she fits the mold. She looks like an OBS March-type filly, so we are really excited about her."

Hip 773 is a bay colt by Constitution  out of the stakes-winning Catienus mare My Kitty. Bred by Chad Austin Reed, TCR Ranch, and Constitution Syndicate, the colt's third dam is multiple stakes winner Tougaloo.

"Constitution is one of the hottest sires in the country right now," Goodwin said. "Anytime you have the opportunity to buy a nice horse by him that's big."

Hip 783 is a colt by Klimt produced from the winning Forest Wildcat mare Obregon. A half brother to stakes-placed Grand Candy, an earner of $308,482, the colt was bred by Goodwin and Rick Smith and descends from the female family of multiple grade 1 winner Lakeway and grade 1 winner Mushka.

"I've been a firm believer in Klimt since day one," Goodwin said. "I supported him with five mares each year and this is one of the best ones I've had. He looks like he is going to be precocious. He has a great walk. We're really happy with him.

"We've always had a game plan of bringing the type of horses that look like they are going to be early, and all of them in this group look like they will be able to go down in :10 or :9 4/5 next year. They are just early, good-looking, fast babies."

It appears things will not be slowing down for the couple anytime soon, but judging by early returns, Goodwin and Krupp and their K P Sales have successfully blazed a new trail.

"Our first year was great," Goodwin said. "If you had told us when we started K P Sales that we were going to top the Louisiana and Texas sales and have a good October sale at OBS on top of everything else that was going on in the world I probably would have laughed."

The final session of the OBS Winter Mixed Sale begins at 10:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday.
